ATLANTA – The Cobb-Marietta Coliseum and Exhibit Hall Authority approved funding and operating agreements with the Cobb County Board of Commissioners for a performing arts centre slated for construction adjacent toCobb Galleria Centre, at I-75 and Cobb Galleria Parkway. The county is reallocating $57 million of the hotel/motel tax to the performing arts center project.
Features of the performing arts centre include a 3,000-seat theatre; 700-seat recital hall; 200-seat experimental theatre, as well as teaching classrooms and meeting space. The $125 million project will sit on 16 prime acres used in 2003 for Cirque du Soleil’s performance of VAREKAI and again in 2004 for the performance of ALEGRIA.
The performing arts centre is being designed by Smallwood, Reynolds, Stewart, Stewart & Associates, a well-known Atlanta-based architectural firm with many large public buildings to its credit including the design of Cobb Galleria Centre. The Facility Group, headquartered in Smyrna, Georgia, will serve as the Authority’s program manager.
