Georgia Pacific has just come out with a paperless drywall called DensArmor Plus Wallboard that is suppose to “prevent? reduce?” mold that grows on the paper surface of drywall.
Anybody buying an older house in Georgia knows about toxic molds that grow and live on the surface of drywall. Especially for older people, this can be a real health hazard and so, the concept of a wall board that is mold resistant is intriguing.
The following information was taken from their website.
Paperless DensArmor® Plus Interior Wallboard is a highly mold-resistant interior gypsum panel. DensArmor Plus panels are ideal for moisture-prone interior walls, in areas such as basements and residential bathrooms. They are also ideal for commercial pre-rock installations. DensArmor Plus Interior Wallboard carries a three-month in-place exposure warranty.
When manufactured and tested in accordance with ASTM D 3273, DensArmor Plus paperless wallboard panels score a 10, the highest level of performance for mold resistance under the ASTM D 3273 test method.
“The score of 10, in the ASTM D3273 test, indicates no mold growth in a 4-week controlled laboratory test. The mold resistance of any building product when used in actual job site conditions may not produce the same results as were achieved in the controlled, laboratory setting. No material can be considered mold proof. When properly used with good design, handling and construction practices, DensGuard Products provide increased mold resistance compared to standard paper faced wallboard products.”
Hmmm - if I am reading this statement right; if you use our product in actual, real life construction projects outside, you may not achieve the same mold free results that we managed to obtain in a controlled, indoor environment.
Ok, while their marketing department may not be on top of it, the product concept is. While not completely original, basements and bathrooms in particular need all of the help they can to avoid the development or growth of mold.
As always however, any drywall that is ever exposed to directly to water should be immediately replaced. You can never just simply “dry out” a piece of drywall, wet drywall with or without the paper will pretty much guarantee future mold growth.
