Kitchen Light Fixtures

Vinings, Georgia

Fluorescent light fixtures are awful.

For the life of me, I cannot understand why builders insist on putting these in just about every single kitchen in the under $300k price range. For about the same price they can just as easily add attractive hanging lights, recessed lights or a host of other options. If there is anyway you can convince them not to install one of these fixtures, do it, even if it means just a single $1.99 light bulb fixture instead.

LightFixtureVinings.jpgNow I could be wrong, perhaps you rather find the vampiric look of white skin on your better half attractive. But if you later decide to remove this unit to replace it with a regular light fixture, you will most likely find two, very large holes used to bolt the unit to the ceiling. Both will ultimately require patching and nothing is a bigger pain than dry walling the holes over when they are in your ceiling. Especially when it comes time to sand your drywall patch job down.

More importantly, pay special attention to the position of the light fixture. If you have a kitchen island, you may want the outlet box positioned over the island, not the middle of the room. If you purchased a condo and have one of those half wall bars typical of apartments, you might opt to add a couple of small hanging lights to shine down over the bar ledge.

Either way, this is one builder grade item that you don’t want installed.
