Lighting upgrades are always hard when you first purchase a new home. Low to middle range homes will typically provide you with several levels of lighting packages to choose from. In each case, you get the bad with the good within each lighting package. Higher end homes provide you with a lighting allowance, which is never enough to outfit the entire home but enough to encourage you to upgrade even to more expensive light fixtures.
Most people tend to focus on their primary hanging lights when deciding on their light packages. These should actually be your last focus since replacing or upgrading a single light fixture at Home Depot is not only easy, but your selection will be much greater. Instead, look at upgrading your kitchen to feature recessed lighting. Your kitchen is the heart and soul of your home and most dome or hanging lights do not produce a nice even spread of light.
Your recessed lighting should be about 6 feet apart between cans and you should have a light can over your range and kitchen sink. Even if it means you are going to have several cans close together, the range and sink should be priority. The light above your range produced from a vent or microwave will be worthless. People also like to see the dishes when they are being washed and nearby can lights do not produce enough direct light since they are unfocused.
Do not place lights cans over your kitchen island since you may want to install a lighted pot rack or hanging light later. If you have a condo with a half wall bar, be sure to include lights here unless you can’t cook and do not want to see what you are eating. Also, try to have your light cans on a separate switch from any other hanging kitchen lights you may have. You may want to add a dimmer switch later to your recessed lights but this will be impractical if they are on the same chain of any other overhead hanging lights.
